A Brisbane med-tech company came to us with a clear clinical problem: the traditional lead alloy shields used in electron radiation therapy are toxic, hazardous to handle, and expensive to dispose of. We helped design and manufacture a precision-engineered alternative — and validated it against the clinical gold standard.
Radiation oncology teams use custom-cut shields (apertures) to shape electron beams for targeted tumour treatment. The traditional material — Low Melting Point Alloy (LMPA, a lead compound — is toxic, requires specialised handling and disposal infrastructure, and can't be safely handled by clinical staff without protection. A non-toxic, precision-manufactured alternative was needed, but it had to match lead's shielding performance exactly to win clinical adoption.
